Spacing for Planting Alder Trees
I am planning to plant an alder boundary behind a new beech and hornbeam hedge in a windy and wet coastal area. How far apart should I space the bare root alder trees?
Alder trees do well in wet ground, while beech does not fare as well and often dies. Hornbeam, on the other hand, can handle heavy soil and some degree of wetness. If you are planting the alder trees as a shelter belt, I recommend spacing them about 1.5 metres apart in the entire area. However, to achieve a more natural look, you can plant them at more random spacing. Keep the trees back 3 metres or more from the hedge to avoid overshadowing it.
