Taking Laurel Cuttings
Is October a good time to take Laurel hedge cuttings? How do I take cuttings and grow them?
The best time to take Laurel cuttings is in September or October, dipping the cutting ends in rooting powder and inserting them in trays with a mix of 2 parts peat and 1 part sand compost. Place them in a cold frame or low plastic tunnel, and pot up or plant out the rooted cutting to grow on in spring. However, for 15-20 meters of hedge, it might be better to buy the few plants required since it will take two years to grow on from cuttings while the rest of the hedge grows away. Laurel is not very expensive to buy.
